Tarnation - A Review
What do creative genius and madness have in common? After viewing Jonathan Caouttes autobiographical documentary Tarnation, I would have to answer that they are quite possibly one in the same.
Using I Movie software on his computer, Caoutte interlaced super 8 footage, vhs videotape, photographs, answering machine messages and music to create a film that tells the story of his tumultuous life, spanning over 20 heartbreaking years.
At the heart of this film is Caouttes mother, Renee, whose life was punctuated and eventually defined by a tragic childhood accident and the aftermath, mental illness and drug abuse. With the information provided us, to state that Caoutte remained relatively unscathed through it all would be an understatement in the worst way. Therefore, Tarnation is part homage to Renee and part homage to Caoutte himself, as evidenced in a scene near the end of the film where he shares with the camera his deep love for Renee and his fearful confession of possibly becoming just like her. Caouttes true genius from a young age is evident much earlier in the film with an on camera impromtu monologue at the age of 11 in which he portrays a battered housewife in quasi drag.
The creation of Tarnation was according to Caoutte himself, influenced strongly by music, wherein scenes were built around favorite songs from his personal cd collection at the time. The soundtrack (not available as a whole) includes music by Low, Iron & Wine, Cocteau Twins (to name a few) and the magnificent instrumental compositions of songwriter/movie composer Max Avery Lichtenstein.
I would recommend Tarnation for the music alone, but the glimpse into creative genius with a hint of madness is so much more than just a mesmerizing aside.
