Opt-in Lists - Do Affiliates Need One?

POSTED BY admin on Jan 11, 2008 under Internet

It seems just about everyone who uses the internet is familiar with email marketing. How can they not be? Up until the government finally stood up and took notice, email spam used to clog up inboxes everyday with ads of every kind of nature. This in its own way was email marketing. Nowadays in order to contact people through their email addresses, the marketer must get explicit permission to do so, and most of the time they get their permission twice. In this way they can create their own email list, often referred to as an opt-in list. This has always been a killer method of making sales for online businesses that sell their own products, but the use of opt-in list by affiliates is a relatively new concept,

That is one question that I have gotten a regular basis. Do affiliates need their own opt-in list? I always reply by asking them “Do you really want to make money?”. Think of it this way…you have put tons of effort into bringing traffic to your site, but what is your actual goal by doing this. Most will answer to sell the product that they are promoting, but what happens if that visitor decides not to buy the product and the leaves. Realistically, what are the chances that the visitor will return at a later date and buy from you then. Your chances will hover around zero! So you spend a great deal of time, work, and sometimes money to bring in visitors that you hope will be willing to buy your product at that very moment in time, and that’s what your entire affiliate marketing career is based on. Don’t get me wrong, you will make some sales that’s a given, but that barely makes up for the time and money that you have put into it. There should be another goal of bringing in visitors, and it is probably more important than selling the product that you have sitting on your webpage.

Building an opt-in list should be just important to an affiliate as making the sale. This way you are able to capture your visitors information even if they leave your site without buying a single thing. So what you are getting is something more valuable than a single sale, you could be getting a customer for life. Or unless until the customer opts out of your list, in which case the affiliate is not doing his or her job. The biggest mistake that you can make with an opt-in list is filling your members’ inboxes with salespage after salespage. Your members won’t like being treated like ATM machines, so they will ditch you just as fast as they signed up. You need to provide your members with information, good stuff that they can really use in their everyday life or business. Once they realize that you are actually trying to help them and not trying to sell then everything on the planet, they will be more likely to trust you and your recommendations.

Once you have gone to all the time and trouble of building your list, then you need to work on building up your credibility. The more credibility that you have with your members the longer they will stick around, and the more likely they will buy the occasional product that you have to recommend to them. And that product that your are recommending absolutely has to be a good product. A product that you have bought and used yourself, so that you can explain the good and the bad about it. Start selling them garbage and they will soon be falling out your list in no time. Just remember to treat your members with the utmost respect and they will do the same for you. And never, ever buy your list from some list building company. Remember even if they opted into the list, they didn’t opt in to your list, which in turn makes you no different than a spammer. And if you are labeled a spammer, you might as well kiss your affiliate marketing career good bye!
