POSTED BY admin on Jun 6, 2008 under Health

Caroli disease also is known as communicating cavernous ectasia. Caroli’s disease is a rare inherited disorder of the liver. It is characterized by saccular and cystic dilatation of intra-hepatic biliary ducts.

Caroli disease is associated with recurrent bacterial cholangitis and stone formation. It is distinct from other diseases that cause ductal dilatation caused by obstruction. It is not one of the many choledochal cyst derivatives. It may be associated with autosomal-recessive polycystic kidney disease. The likely mechanism involves an in utero event that arrests ductal plate remodeling at the level of the larger intrahepatic bile ducts.
