Adults with ADD: Using Time as a Tool
Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) benefit from using time as a tool rather than a constraint.

My recent facation experience (fake [staying local plus checking into the office] + vacation [technically being off from work] = facation) had me thinking quite a lot about the concept of time management and why it is such a challenge for adults with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). It comes down to power.
We give time too much power.
Time is a construct. It was created to measure. Any meaning we assign to it is, so to speak, our own ’stuff.’ Take, for example, the following cliches:
Multiple Income Sources - How To Juggle The Workload
The fragmented nature of the modern economy, the loss of job security and our increasing desire for financial independence, means that one of the best strategies for building a solid financial future is to cultivate multiple sources of income.
Being able to call on more than one revenue stream, gives us safety in numbers; if one stream fluctuates, the impact can be set off against the cushion of the others. Multiple streams also give us a life of increased variety and often the chance to spend time doing something much more to our liking than we might be doing in a full time job.
Time Management Or Procrastination - It Is Up To You To Choose
I. Time Management is a key skill
Time is probably the most precious resource we have. Balancing a busy work life with a busy personal life can be more enjoyable if you develop the skills necessary to manage your time effectively. There is the need to keep up to date with what is happening in your work, your business, your market, your industry, and of course there are those personal obligations. We find it difficult to say “no” to extra demands that are placed on us, but the solution is within our control. To avoid stress and avoid disappointing those to whom we have made commitment we must manage our time effectively. If you make a commitment to deliver an item or service to a customer, and don’t meet that obligation, it is like saying, “I have found someone more important than you”. Do you think you will retain their custom?
Professors - Increase Your Productivity By Asking The Right Questions
This article is short and sweet. You may consider printing it to post–in several places in your office (and carry one with you). Some of these are questions to ask of yourself and others are to be asked of others.
When someone makes a request of you AND when you think of taking on different projects, ask the “asker” one or more of these questions:
- Does this _______ (activity, task, job, responsibility, commitment) fit with my goals? (Note: This one is difficult to answer if you don’t know what your goals are).
Top 5 Reasons Most Time Management Systems Fail (and How You Can Move From Frenzy To Freedom)
We’re all feeling pressured these days. We’re making do with less. We’re on call 24/7 Our email inboxes are overflowing
So - no surprise - we’re getting bombarded with guides to manage our time more efficiently. Visit any bookstore and you will find dozens (maybe hundreds) of titles with “time” in the title. Surf the Internet for “coach” and you’ll soon learn the truth: more people hire coaches for time management than for any other reason.
Workplace Unhappiness 1 - Isolating The Source Of Your Misery
In a recent blog post entitled The Secret to Happiness, I touch upon the concept of Subjective Well Being, or SWB for short. Subjective well being refers to an individual’s current evaluation of his or her happiness. It includes:
The sense of satisfaction one feels with one’s life, both in general and in specific areas, such as relationships, health and work.
Lack of depression and anxiety.
Positive moods and emotions.
If you’re unhappy at work, and/or unfulfilled by your job (yes, there’s a difference), it’s tempting to point the finger at offending parties and situations. Examples might be:
